Polymerase Chain Reaction
"Together we create billions in an hour !"
Dr. Kary Banks Mullis
Kary Banks Mullis, a Nobel Chemistry Prize winner, was born on December 28, 1944, in Lenoir, North Carolina. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the Georgia Institue of Technology in 1966. In 1977, he started his two years of postdctoral work in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Kary joined Cetus Corporation in Emeryville, California, as a DNA chemist in 1979. During his years there, he conducted research on oligonucleotide synthesis and invented the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). In 1993, Dr. Kary received his Nobel Prize, the prize motivation is “for his invention of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method”.
The process then conceptualized in 1983, is regarded as one of the most outstanding scientific techniques of the twentieth century. PCR is a method of amplyfying DNA by multiplying a single, microscopic strand of the genetic material billions of times within few hours. This process has revolutionized the world of biochemistry and genetics. It has multiple applications in biotechnology, forensics, medicine and genetics. With his PCR invention, Dr. Kary was also awarded the Japan Prize in 1993. It is one of the most prestigious awards internationally.
